Survival in Two Worlds. Moshoeshoe of Lesotho. 1786–1870

Moshoeshoe grew up in the interior of southern Africa when it was still isolated from the wider world. He began to build a kingdom when his home was invaded by other Africans, but for the rest of his life he struggled to preserve for his people as much territory, social cohesion, and political autonomy as he could in the face of White expansion. The modern state of Lesotho, independent again since1966 after nearly a century of British over-rule,is his legacy.
