John Xavier Merriman (1841-1926) South African statesman and Prime Minister of Cape Colony.Born in Street Somerset,England.He came to South Africa in 1849 and quallified as a land surveyor.In 1868,entered politics,holding the position of Commissioner for Crown Lands.For a while he was on the Witwatersrand engaged in mining.He became a member of the Government enquiry into the Jameson Raid in 1896,and drew-up its report,He was a successfull wine farmer at Schoongezicht,A very active partisipent in the political sciene throughout the Cape,and was honoured as “John X” South Africa’s greatest parlimentarian.

H/b in soiled boards,vol 1 very badly affected by damp pickling,and general markings Corners bumped and spines faded.Sizes 9×6 pp vol 1=XV+349-vol 2 = XXI+308.indexes,f/o maps,plates as cartoons,and reproduced b/w photographs including frontispieces,page maps,sources quoted and consulted.Hinges strong Binding good to firm,Vol 2 is an ex.reference library copy with some markings and stamps to end-papers but nothing to serious.No foxing,staining or browning.Both internally clean and bright throughout.
