Pedagogy In Process:The Letters to Guinea Bissau presents a firsthand account of the most comprehensive attempt yet to put into practice Paulo Freire’s concept of education within a total societal setting.During 500 years of colonial rule, Guinea-Bissau on the West African coast had only 14 university graduates;and when the Portuguese withdrew in 1974,90% of the adult population was illiterate.As a result, the new government faced an enormous task if it were to take educating its citizens seriously.And so,they invited Freire to collaborate in what was literally a grass roots literacy campaign.
