Backgrowned to Bitterness. The story of South Africa 1652-1954

Although events in South Africa in recent years have provoked world-wide interest,no book has yet appeared describing the historical events out of which arose the present racial and political conflicts:the first settlement, the relation of Dutch burghers to the Dutch East Indies Company and to the native peoples, the cause of the Great Trek, the reasons for the Boer War,and its confused aftermath, the effect of European events on the growing country. The purpose of this book,an interpretative history,is to bring the elements involved into their true perspective.
